Red Room News

Welcome back!  We hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing winter break.  We will begin January at Monica Ros with Arts Month.  This is school wide; each class is exploring a different art medium with China in mind.  The Red Room will be making a mosaic using rice and creating pictures using Chinese tangrams.  The Monica Ros Art Gallery showcasing our entire school’s art projects will be open on January 27th, through the 29th and 30th.

This month we will also be learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and all of his accomplishments.  This year as well as many years past, each of our classes at Monica Ros has created a poster for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration held at Libbey Park.  This year, the celebration is on Monday January 16th.  Our Kindergarten and Grade school students will be singing, come listen and see the poster exhibit.  This year’s theme of the celebration is “our lives begin to end the day we became silent about things that matter”.   We will discuss this in class hmmm actually we will focus on his accomplishments.  So…if you hear your child talking about a little girl not being able to sit where she wanted to on a bus, or certain children not being able to drink water from the same water fountain you will now have an idea what we are talking about and can continue the discussion at home.

Open house this year is Sunday, January 29th, from 1-3.  The afternoon will look like this.  From 1 to 1:30 visit art exhibit, 1:30 to 2 visit your current classroom, 2:00 to 2:30 visit next year’s classroom and finally from 2:30 to 3:00 cookies!

January 30th at 10:30 is Founder’s Day: the day we celebrate Monica Ros’ 111th birthday.  Parents, family and friends are invited to enjoy this whole-school assembly which takes place on the black top.  Each class presents a song or a poem in honor of Mrs. Ros and then we have some birthday cake.  It’s a great show and the only time all year you can see the whole school in action.

Mrs. Carbajal will be returning from winter break on Monday January 9th.  We have Mrs. Peakes all week long in the Red Room, lucky us!!

January promises to be a busy and productive one.  Please save the dates below.
