Second graders, having gained confidence in reading, writing, and arithmetic, progress beyond the basics of first grade into the depth of chapter books, writing more detailed creative stories, and learning to analyze literature. In math, they master concepts such as telling time and counting money through the use of a rich variety of manipulative materials. The community is a central focus in social studies, and the class ventures out to learn more about their own Ojai community, its businesses, and workers. In science, second graders participate in simple experiments and research that could include charting a seed as it sprouts, creating a relief map of Pangaea, and studying the life cycle of a frog. The class puts on an annual play, participates with the other grade school classes in Poetry Night and the Science Fair, and, of course, no day at Monica Ros School would be complete without art, music, Spanish, or physical education!
