First grade represents a natural continuum of the foundations built in kindergarten for language arts and mathematics. Naturally, as students progress through the grades, academic expectations grow as well. In first grade, students begin to master the rules of phonics, reading, writing, and mathematics. First graders learn much about personal responsibility, managing their homework and at-home reading, and following directions. They have the opportunity to write short stories, narratives, and poems.
As is the Monica Ros way, hands-on learning is central to the first grade experience. In science, first graders pursue the scientific study of the natural world, seasons, and the weather. History comes alive with units about Japan, Johnny Appleseed, China, and great American heroes, the latter culminating in a much-anticipated annual class performance. The first grade goes on field trips throughout the Ojai Valley and Ventura County, participates in the grade school play, Poetry Night, Science Fair, and, of course, enjoys the special subjects: art, music, Spanish, and physical education.
