The New Year is in full swing! It was so nice to see your children’s smiling faces after our long break! Everyone seems to be exploding with new language and social skills and it is exciting to see their successes as they delve through their day!

January is Arts Month at Monica Ros. The focus of the month is to explore art as a form of self-expression and discover an appreciation for art through critical observation. Our class will be investigating the works of Eric Carle. If you are not already familiar with Eric Carle, he is an author and illustrator of many treasured children’s books such as The Mixed – Up Chameleon, From Head To Toe and Where Are You Going?, just to name a few.

We will read the books and discuss his unique technique. He deftly illustrates his charming stories by creating collages with torn paper. Therefore, our expression of art this month will be collage, collage and more collages as we investigate this medium made famous for the younger set by Mr. Carle! In addition to paper, we will use many different materials from everyday life. Don’t worry; you’ll get a chance to see it all…

On January 29 and 30 art projects from every student in the school, including three specific projects from Green Roomers, will be displayed in Meyer Hall at our Founder’s Day exhibit celebrating the birthday of Monica Ros. Everyone is invited to come and see the beautiful art work created by each Monica Ros student. Don’t miss it!

Dates to remember:

January 19 – No School – Martin Luther King Day (all students are invited to perform at Libey Park. We will be singing at 11:30, please meet at the fountain at 11:25.

January 22nd from 5:30 TO 6:30 – A Day in the Life..of a Monica Ros student. Strart your evening with your child in the Green Room where we’ll show you what happens after you say goodbye. At 6:00, you have an opportunity to visit the Red and Blue rooms and see what’s in store for next year.

January 30th – 10:00 – Founder’s Day-Every class offers a performance in honor of our Founder.

We are also working on festive projects which you will reap the reward. You will receive all their projects and gifts on the 19th after the program.

Please dress you children in layers during the winter months. They will be more comfortable as the mornings are cold and the afternoons warm up.

Colds. Many of the children are coming to school with very runny noses, droopy eyes, and a low level of energy. Please try to keep your children home if they have these symptoms. It makes us sad to see them feeling so low!

Art Auction. Annmarie (Juliana’s mom), and Susannah (Javi’s mom), are going to be creating our Art Auction Project with the children. The Art Auction is in March. It is a parent evening and very fun. If you have any ideas for the project tell us as you will most likely be the ones or one to purchase the item at the auction. Past items are bookshelves, children’s table and chairs, etc.

This Week:

We are playing Reindeer Games in class. Reindeer nose toss, Reindeer dramatic play, Reindeer art, etc.

Next Week:

For the remainder of October we welcome Fall into the classroom.  We be exploring the change of season, fall colors, gourds, pumpkins, pumpkins, and more pumpkins…

October is Fire Prevention Month.  We will discuss fire safety through books and projects this week and experience our first fire drill.  On Wednesday, after morning singing we will have a special guest, Wyatt’s Dad.  He is a fire fighter and will be reading a story to the children and bringing in his gear for the children to try on.  What a great three dimensional experience for our class!

This Friday we will be going on our first fieldtrip.  We have been given a special invitation to Faulkner Farm’s Pumpkin Patch.  They will be opening the farm just for us!!!!  That’s right JUST US!!!!  Thanks to Blake’s mom, Carla!  The Blue and Red Room will be joining us.  Siblings are welcome.  The cost is $5 per child, siblings need to pay too.  Parents are free.  We will pass out permission slips this week.  We will leave Monica Ros at 8:50 and return about 12:15.  Our time at the farm is 9:30-11:30.  Pack lunch in a disposable bag, PLEASE!  Snack will be served.  If you are unable to attend the fieldtrip please leave your child’s car seat.  Tuesday and Thursday children are invited, too, but a parent needs to attend with them.  If you plan to meet us at Faulkner Farm, please let us know by Thursday so we do not leave without you and your child.  We will be leaving precisely at 8:50!!  Please give your permission slip and $5 to Mrs. Drury or Mrs. Winbury.

We will have a Halloween Party on Friday October 31st.  Thank you to Ben’s mom, Bridget, and Skylar’s mom, Leslie, for hosting the party.  Children may wear their costumes to school.  Costumes may not have masks or weapons.  Please bring a change of clothes for your child.

Week of August 25-29, 2008

A Note from Mrs. Drury and Mrs. Winbury
Welcome to the Green Room!  We have officially started the school year.  Our first days went well.  We were busy painting, exploring the classroom, and separating from our parents.  We only had a few tears and those will dry up over the next couple of weeks.  How did all of you do?  We appreciate that you allowed your children to separate at 9 a.m.  This truly is the easiest way for them to learn to trust us and become independent in their new school.
A few important reminders:
Arrival time is 8:45.  Morning daycare is 7:30- 8:45.  You may come and play with your children starting at 8:30 and separating by 9:00.
Please remember to sign in and out every day.  Sign in sheets will always be on a table at the front gate.
Please label EVERYTHING your children bring to school… clothes, jackets, lunchboxes and Tupperware.  Packing up lunchboxes after the children have eaten becomes confusing for everyone if each item is not labeled.  This insures you are able to reduce and reuse lunch containers.
At 12:45 we walk the children to the rock wall by the front gate.  They sit on the rock wall and we will walk them to you one at a time to insure safety.  This is also the best time for us to have conversations with you about their day.  After a few weeks and the children have adjusted to their new surroundings and learned the routine we will invite you to have lunch with us, join us for our end of the day song, and to come and play.
Please look on the Green Room front door for daily updates.  We will post volunteer opportunities, sign-up sheets, class information, children’s quotes, and other important news.
The Green Room milk program will be ORGANIC!  We are also working with Tajmana’s parents to create an organic snack schedule.  We appreciate your interest and efforts to create a healthy and safe environment.  We are very excited!
Our planned curriculum and small group activities will begin in the next two weeks.  We have the class set up with exciting activities every day.  At this time we are teaching the children how to use the classroom and our routine.  We are spending time with each child and getting to know their interests.
Socialization
Many of your children are experiencing their first school situation.  We are all discovering what behaviors are acceptable within a group and within our play.  There may be an occasional situation where a child is hit, but not many.  We take the proactive approach and we will help the children learn safe and respectful play with others.  Please be patient with your own children and the others.  Know that this is all age appropriate behavior and we are prepared to help them through every stage of their development.
This Week
This Friday, August 29th, is the First Annual Green Room Social.  We hope you will all attend.  This is a potluck!  Please sign up on the front door to bring a dish.  This is not a mandatory event.  Our goal is to create a well- bonded community.  We will share information about Monica Ros and answer any questions you may have about our class and the school.
We are very excited for this year!  Many of you have approached us with wonderful fieldtrip ideas, sustainable living ideas, and much more.  Your children are wonderful!  Thank you for the opportunity to spend our days with them!  Let’s PLAY!

Your Green Room Teachers,
Mrs. Drury and Mrs. Winbury

Green Room News                                                                   February – March 2008

Love is in the air in the Green Room!  How do you fill a bucket with love?  We have a few ideas thanks to Logan and his Mom, Nathalie, who brought in a wonderful book about kind behavior and “filling a bucket with love”.  We have learned that kind actions and words can help to build others’ self-esteem and our own.

Arts Month was busy and full of creativity.  We hope you all had a chance to see your child’s art work in Meyer Hall last week.  Each child worked very hard on their art pieces.  Their projects will be sent home this week.

 February activities

Hearts, hearts, and more hearts!  The classroom is bursting with love and friendship!  Every project is followed with “my mommy is going to love this.”  We will be having our class Valentine party at 11:45 Thurs. Feb 14th. (Sign-ups are on the bulletin board in the classroom.)  Everyone is invited, if you are a MWF student, please come and join us at 11:45 to enjoy the festivities.  We distribute cards by walking around a circle of classmates and handing them to each other.   Please have your child sign the card (a helping hand is fine). Please DO NOT write the recipient’s name on individual valentines. If there are names written on the cards, the children can’t deliver the cards independently or focus on the exchange.  The teachers’ attention is also taken away from the group to help the deliverer read names.  So, please no names!  Only your child’s name signed on the card. This makes the giving so much easier for everyone. Thank you!

Art Auction

Art Auction, a must go!!!  Socialize with your children’s friends parents. At the auction you have the opportunity to eat, drink, and purchase beautiful items, gift certificates, and vacations.  This is a fun evening to support your child’s school.  Remember we are a non-profit school and all purchases are tax-deductible!!    Three of our parents are collaborating to make our classroom project which will be sold at the auction!

Each class puts together a collection or basket to add to the silent auction.  The Green Room Class theme this year is BEACH.  Please bring in ANY item that is related to a day at the beach.  Ex.: Towel, beach balls, sunscreen, hibachi, etc. etc.
