First Grade – Grade School Note

Friday, December 12th, 2008

Dear Parents,

This note is one of sincere gratitude for all that has been done by you to enrich our school life and the lives of others. Thank you for the generous donations of food and money and gifts for our Adopt-A-Family program. Your generosity will enable needy families to enjoy cheer and good food during this season.
To the Carneys, the Popes, the Schmids, and the Zahringers we send our thanks for the wonderful books that you gave to the class. Our children and generations to come will enjoy your gifts.
Stacey_Davis and Donna_Pope spent a morning constructing gingerbread houses. The children are anxious to begin “nibbling” this holiday treat. Thank you, ladies.
Kent_Jones prepared delicious latkes for the class on Wednesday. Teachers and children alike loved this traditional Jewish food. Thank-you.
Our Miela has been concerned about the needs of the victims of the recent fires. She has asked that her classmates join her in helping them. At first she thought that she would collect used clothing but after visiting the Red Cross center she and her Mother learned that they were in great need of food. A donation box will be at the gate next week to help fill that empty pantry. Miela and her Mother will deliver your donations.
Thanks to our current class representatives to Sudent Council, Miela, Sydney and Kate, an awesome Monday is planned for the school. North Pole Day will be enjoyed by all. Lots of surprises are in store. Your child may wear anything to school that vaguely brings the North Pole to mind!
Have a happy week and please know that I am always grateful for your constant goodness to us. Mrs. K.

Green Room Preschool – December News

Hello Green Roomers! This is a busy time of year for all of us: holiday parties, family get togethers, shopping, projects, traveling, and chilly weather. What fun!

In the classroom…

Over the next two weeks your children will be hard at work preparing for our holiday program on December 19th at 10:30. Don’t miss it, it is wonderful! We are also working on festive projects which you will reap the reward. You will receive all their projects and gifts on the 19th after the program.

Please dress you children in layers during the winter months. They will be more comfortable as the mornings are cold and the afternoons warm up.

Colds. Many of the children are coming to school with very runny noses, droopy eyes, and a low level of energy. Please try to keep your children home if they have these symptoms. It makes us sad to see them feeling so low!

Art Auction. Annmarie (Juliana’s mom), and Susannah (Javi’s mom), are going to be creating our Art Auction Project with the children. The Art Auction is in March. It is a parent evening and very fun. If you have any ideas for the project tell us as you will most likely be the ones or one to purchase the item at the auction. Past items are bookshelves, children’s table and chairs, etc.

This Week:

We are playing Reindeer Games in class. Reindeer nose toss, Reindeer dramatic play, Reindeer art, etc.

Next Week:

We will explore the book The Polar Express. Please send your children to school in pajamas on Tuesday and Wednesday. We will bake holiday cookies, read, sing, etc.

We will explore the changing seasons, traditions, and continue practicing for the holiday program.

If you are going out of town prior to the 19th please let us know and we will try to get all your children’s projects finished early.

December 17th 5:30 pm- Monica Ros Chorus Concert at School.

December 18th 7:00pm- Gradeschool Holiday Concert.

Kindergarten News        December 2008

We welcomed the children back from a week of giving thanks to begin a look at warm holiday traditions.  We will be reading many versions of a beloved holiday tale, The Gingerbread Man.  As we read the story we’ll be baking, graphing, comparing, enacting and incorporating the science of our taste and smell into this curriculum.  We will culminate the festivities at our annual Holiday Program on December 19th   at 10:30 am.    The kids have been practicing the songs, in anticipation of the performance.

Language Arts:

In addition to all the “merry –making” we will forge ahead with reading and writing.  We will be reading seasonal literature, including Caldecott Medal Winner, The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg.  We will also read The Legend of the Poinsettia, a Mexican legend retold by Tommie de Paola.   The warmth, tradition and magic of these stories are fitting for this season.

Math:

We will continue working on our numeral formation and counting.  We will be making a class number line using decorated Christmas trees to reinforce the skill of counting by 1’s and 10’s.  The kids will enjoy making their very own “Monster Squeeze” and “Spin a Number” game, both of which work on number recognition two great games to enjoy over the holiday break.

Notes and Reminders:

Things seem to be going great on our Adopt-a-Family project.  The last day to contribute is December 10th.

Holiday Program will be Friday, December 19th @10:30 a.m. (no day care following performance)

We would like to extend warm wishes to each of your families.  We are very pleased and proud of each of our students.  They truly bring joy to our days and delight to our hearts. We wish the best of the holidays to you all.

Alice and Rychelle
